Frederick W. Steines and his father Herman were both justices of the peace in the far western area of St. Louis County that is now Chesterfield and Wildwood. Frederick was born near Melrose, St. Louis County, Missouri, on 27 May 1839 to Herman Steines and Louisa (Westholz) Steines. On 29 October 1869, Frederick Steines married Johanna Von Gruben and they had eight children. He enlisted in the 30th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, served three years, and was discharged due to illness. After his recovery he joined the Missouri Militia. Throughout his adult life, he listed his occupation as farmer, according to census records.
In 1876, he was elected justice of the peace and served in that capacity until 1913. Frederick died 13 May 1916 and he and his wife are buried at Bethel Methodist cemetery in Pond, Missouri. Also, there is a Steines Family Cemetery (S14)
During his tenure in the Missouri court, Frederick kept notes on court proceedings in a ledger, copies of which were donated by his family members, Sharon Hemman and Irma McKenzie, and transcribed by StLGS volunteer Joyce Mercer. This was previously printed in a series of St. Louis Genealogical Society Quarterlies, volume 31, Winter 1998, and volume 32, Spring 1999, Summer 1999, and Fall 1999.
