During St. Louis’s first four decades, it was a small French-speaking settlement on the western bank of the Mississippi River. Many early residents were French Creoles who moved from communities east of the river after France surrendered that territory to Great Britain. Although Spain governed St. Louis for most of this period, French language, Catholic traditions, and extended family relationships continued to shape daily life.

Residents lived in a compact French-speaking settlement surrounded by gardens, farms, and common fields. Families depended on farming, hunting, fishing, and the fur trade. Marriage connected households across the Mississippi Valley, while women often managed property and maintained important family relationships.

The settlement was diverse from its beginning. Enslaved people of African and Native ancestry lived and worked alongside free French and Spanish residents. Native peoples regularly visited St. Louis and were essential participants in the region’s economic and social life.

Catholic baptism, marriage, and burial registers are especially valuable for identifying these families. Spanish land grants, marriage contracts, probate files, and notarial records may reveal additional information. French naming customs, repeated given names, and dit names can complicate research.

In 1804, St. Louis became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase, beginning a new period of rapid growth and change.
