Founded in 1949 as the Buchholz Mortuary by William G. Buchholz, the original facility was at 5967 West Florissant Avenue in north St. Louis City. William had been a funeral director and embalmer, having worked for and then with Mathias Hermann’s funeral home located near Fair Avenue in St. Louis.
Wiliam’s son Cletus became president of the firm when they moved to a second location in Spanish Lake, St. Louis County, in 1969. Once again, in 1984, the firm expanded. This time, they selected a mid-20th century building at 619 Fue St. Francois in Florissant to refurbish and rename as Buchholz Valley of Flowers Mortuary. This is now their main office.
This family-owned business continues as Cletus and Philomena Buchholz’s children, Tom and Cindy, now own the company. They have opened a fourth location, Buchholz Mortuary West, serving western St. Louis County, and in 2003, they acquired all of the records from the Mathias Hermann and Son Funeral Home.
